3D Ballast System Modelling Software Wins IT Solution Award

ClassNK has received the IT Solutions Award for its 3D modelling software, ClassNK-PEERLESS, at the International Bulk Journal (IBJ) Awards in Antwerp on November 16, 2015.

This unique 3D software that is used for ballast water treatment system (BWTS) retrofits fits the specification as it was created to ease the bottleneck of BWTS retrofits stacking up to backlog at shipyards thanks to the long design times associated with conventional 3D modelling. This bottleneck is expected to be exacerbated following the ratification and entry into force of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention).

Launched in 2014, the ClassNK –PEERLESS streamlines the process by eliminating the need to enter the engine room and measure every structure manually, reducing pressure on shipyards and designers.

The software was developed by the Japanese classification society in partnership with University of Toyko, NYK Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, “K” Line, Sasebo Heavy Industries, Sanwa Dock, MTI, S.E.A Systems, Armonicos using outcomes from joint R&D projects, starting in May 2012.

To date, the ClassNK-PEERLESS has been used on 27 ships with ballast water management system (BWMS) retrofits.

This marks the second consecutive year that ClassNK has won the IBJ’s IT Solutions Award. Last year the company received the award for its jointly developed ship performance monitoring and optimisation solution, ClassNK-NAPA GREEN.
