AIDA Cruises, a Carnival Corporation & plc German brand, has completed a test run for the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on its AIDAprima newbuild cruise ship, marking the world’s first cruise ship with a dual-fuel engine, enabling it to operate on LNG while in port.
The AIDAprima, which is based in Hamburg, Germany, will use LNG while in port to eliminate the ship’s emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter, while nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) will be reduced by 80% by up to 20%, respectively.
The preparations and initial permit procedures for the port of Rotterdam are already well underway, while Southampton, Le Havre, and Zeebrugge authorities have already given their approval.
Under AIDA Cruises’ ‘Green Concept’, the company will operate all ships put into service in 2019/2020 onwards with 100% low-emissions LNG.
