Transas Makes Its Mark on Cayman Maritime Week 2016

Transas has made its mark on the 2016 Cayman Maritime Week, presenting its concept for coastal monitoring and ship traffic control in Caribbean waters alongside sharing its views on using simulators as tools for marine environment protection.

One of the highlights from the event was Transas’ simulator demonstration of a new proposed terminal for cruise ships based on plans received from the Cayman Port Authority.  At the moment the docking facilities do not allow for cruise ships to come alongside and recent discussions have revolved around extending two piers to allow cruise ships to dock at the terminal.

Frank Coles, Transas CEO, commented: “This would greatly alleviate the potential damage to the coral reef system and the need to tender passengers to and from the island. As a part of this, the island is carrying out a major environmental research programme, taking into account the effect of building these new piers. The use of simulation technology would enable the port authorities to look at how building the new cruise terminal could impact the island’s ecosystem.”

Transas also used its high-tech simulator to demonstrate how pollution can spread from one country to another and what can be done to prevent it.  Transas stated that mathematical models can be used to set up wind and currents in its simulators to use for emergency oil spill response and pollution tracking training.

Transas also showed its enthusiasm for involving young people in the maritime industry by welcoming visits from the Cayman high schools at its booth and talking to them about global shipping and seafaring traditions as a way to encourage younger generations to become involved in the high-tech and electronic age of shipping we are in today.
