California issues letter to remind of new biofouling regulations

The California State Lands Commission (SLC) has issued a final letter on its new biofouling regulations to come into effect from October 1, 2017.

The regulations, which were approved in April this year, require adoption of a new Marine Invasive Species Program Annual Vessel Reporting Form and a Biofouling Management Plan.

The regulations will also ensure shipping companies have developed and maintain a Biofouling Record Book and carry out mandatory biofouling management of the vessel’s wetted surfaces.

Vessels that remain in the same location for more than 45 days must implement mandatory biofouling management too.

The California SLC expects there to be many queries on the upcoming regulation and is developing a series of customer service meetings in northern and southern California as well as internet-based webinars to assist.
