Californian Port Welcomes Green Energy Efforts

The Port of Long Beach, California, has installed solar panels in two of the port areas to reduce emissions of 1,127 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

A 904.75kW Mitsubishi Electric photovoltaic (PV) system will be fitted in order to produce around 1,547MWh of energy per year. This PV system is to contribute the port’s sustainability efforts and its drive to become one of the greenest ports in the world.

The solar panels are robust enough to withstand corrosion from the high salt content in the air surrounding the terminal.

Anthony Otto, president of Long Beach Container Terminal, commented: “With the aggressive environmental measures mandated by the Green Port Policy, the Port of Long Beach is a model for ports around the world. This new solar system at LBCT terminal E helps us become the first near-zero-emission container terminal on the planet.”
