De Nora Wins Ballast Contract

5 Nov

De Nora is to supply multiple BALPURE ballast water management systems (BWMS) to one of North America’s major oil and tanker operators.

The BALPURE system uses electrolytic disinfection technology to treat ballast water carrying invasive aquatic species. The technology is based around a slip stream method which uses 0.5-1% of total ballast water flow to generate the hypochlorite disinfection solution.

This slip stream approach is particularly advantageous as it permits high performance in very low temperatures and low salinity waters. Treatment is only required during uptake of the ballasting cycle and is able to process flow rates up to 6,000m3/h. In addition, the BALPURE system uses significantly less electric power than similar technologies, reducing operational costs, and comes equipped with a coating developed by De Nora that facilitates self-cleaning.

De Nora’s BALPURE system has received full International Maritime Organization (IMO) Type Approval and US Coast Guard (USCG) Alternative Management Systems (AMS) certification. Additionally, the system has been Bureau Veritas Type-Approved and ABS Design Assessed. De Nora has also applied for USCG Type Approval which it expects to receive in due course.

The company stated that five cruise oil tankers, ranging from 125,000-141,740DWT are to be retrofitted, with installations due to take place between mid-2016 and 2018.
