Project for safe Arctic navigation given €6.5m

€6.5m has been set aside by an EU program, Horizon 2020, to help improve Arctic maritime navigation.

  • Safe maritime operations under extreme conditions (SEDNA) is a project that works to improve safety for ships operating in challenging environments, such as the Arctic.
  • Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, it aims to create a safe Arctic bridge using technology to improve awareness and decision-making and address safe bunkering of methanol.
  • It also plans to develop anti-icing engineering solutions to reduce the impact of ice formation and ensure vessel designs are connected to all key hazards of ship operation in the Arctic.
