VTT develops technology to steer autonomous ships

Finland based VTT Technical Research Centre is developing technology that will be used to help safely control and steer remote-monitored and autonomous ships from land.

  • One technology is Apilot, which has three modes for track, heading and slow joystick control.
  • Track mode enables auto navigation along a previously travelled route. If an obstruction is detected, the system switches to heading mode, which allows the vessel to avoid the obstacle. Joystick mode enables adjustment of the control and propulsion to low speed for docking.
  • There are particular challenges of safety in autonomous and remote controlled ships as the must be controlled in various situations so navigation systems specifically for autonomous ships are vital says Jussi Martio, a Senior Scientist at VTT.
