First Ship Recycling Certificate Awarded by RINA

RINA Services has awarded its first ISO 30000:2009 certificate and Hong Kong Convention (HKC) Statement of Compliance (SoC) to ship recycling yard Shubh Arya Steel in Alang, India.

Shubh Arya Steel has made continuous effort to invest in infrastructure to meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) HKC on the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships. A management system that meets ISO Standards including ISO 9001: 2008, ISO 14001: 2004, OHSAS 18001: 2007 and ISO 30000:2009 as well as the HKC SoC was implemented.

Throughout this year there have been a number of shipyards that have upgraded their yard’s infrastructure in order for it to meet the requirements of the Convention, prior it entering into force. It is hoped that Alang shipyard’s certification will encourage other ship owners to recycle their ships at HKC compliant yards and drive investment in upgrades to shipyard infrastructure to meet the HKC.

The Alang shipyard certification award ceremony was attended by the European Community Ship Owner’s Association (ECSA) on April 28th 2016.
