Five Ship Owners Opt For MRV Pre-Flight Checks

11 Nov

DFDS Seaways, Euronav Ship Management, NEDA Maritime Agency, Seaspan Ship Management and Synergy Maritime have all appointed Emissions verification company Verifavia to assess their organisations for readiness for the European Commisson’s (EC) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) rules via a pre-verification gap analysis

Under the MRV rules, from 1 January 2018 ships will be required to monitor, report and submit their independently verified CO2emissions on all voyages to, from and between EU ports on a per-voyage and annual basis.

As MRV is new to the shipping industry, Verifavia believe that partnering with ship owners, operators and managers will help them to understand and navigate MRV compliance, supporting the companies prior to the Regulation entering into force. Verifavia’s pre-verification gap analysis will assess the existing data, accounting procedures and systems against the requirements of the MRV Regulation, identifying any potential issues and non-compliance.

Each shipping company will be provided with a review based on their fuel and cargo data collection, transmission and transformation procedures, as well as carbon emissions and activity data.  The company’s operational documentation will also be reviewed to determine if it contains sufficient details for the implementation of the allowed fuel consumption monitoring methods.

Poul Woodall, Director, Environment and Sustainability, DFDS Seaways, stated: “MRV regulation is new and therefore unfamiliar, so we are grateful to Verifavia Shipping for conducting our compliance review. This has been based on interviews, document review, observation of systems and processes, and corroboration of information. The process has required very little investment of our time and resource, but now provides us with the reassurance that we are on track to meet MRV compliance.”
