Germany invests in LNG for the maritime sector

The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has announced a new financing programme to promote the use of liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel.

  • Programme will increase the use of alternative fuels in shipping and reduce emissions.
  • Funding will be used to fit LNG propulsion systems to newbuilds as well as to retrofit existing ships with dual-fuel capabilities.
  • German Shipowners’ Association welcomed the government’s initiative and says that the programme will help shipping companies to bear the costs of LNG-powered vessels as retrofitting or building these vessels is expensive.
