Gothenburg shows off first berthed ship-ship LNG bunkering

THE Swedish port of Gothenburg has demonstrated its first ship-ship LNG bunkering as it pushes ahead with plans to turn itself into a gas bunkering hub.

The bunkering operations took place last week and about 330 cm3 of LNG was transferred from the LNG-bunker vessel Coralius and the Ternsund, one of the dual fuel newbuildings owned by Terntank, a Swedish owner.

“It as a successful operation that went totally as planned,” said Port of Gothenburg’s Dan-Erik Andersson in a statement.

For the Swedish port the bunkering operation demonstrated that best practice routines are effective for such operations. There have not been many different ship- ship LNG bunker transfers to date. Perhaps one of the most frequent is the near daily transfer of LNG to Viking Grace from AGA’s small converted ferry “Seagas.”

For the port this was not quite the first such operation, a test was conducted earlier in the year, but this was the first one while the receiving vessel was alongside the terminal. But the terminal says this recent operation alongside takes this kind of operation to a new level.

“We now have a new milestone, in that we can now offer vessels LNG bunkering while they are alongside” said Anderson. “It is a demand from the market that we create the possibility for efficiency of the vessel’s time in port.”

This is also of commercial importance for the port as Swedegas, the country’s gas infrastructure business, will build the infrastructure to import LNG through the port that can be used by Swedish industry and transport sectors.
