Honduras ratifies ballast water convention

Honduras is the latest state to sign up to the International Maritime Organization’s ballast water management convention.

  • This latest ratification brings the total number of states signed up to the convention to 61, representing 68.46% of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage.
  • The convention will enter into force on September 8, 2017.
  • Ships constructed after this date must comply on delivery by fitting an approved ballast water treatment system, while existing ships must comply by the first IOPP renewal after September 8, 2019.
