The IMO has begun preparations in New York ahead of the UN Ocean Conference that is to take place in June.
- The conference will focus on ‘Life Below Water’, Goal 14 on the UN’s Sustainable Development list, which aims to conserve oceans and use them sustainably.
- According to the IMO, lack of sustainable ocean practices are leading to 40% of the world’s oceans being degraded.
- IMO supports Goal 14 by implementing global standards and providing technical assistance such as through its Globallast and GloMEEP projects.
