Japan gets first SOx scrubber certified

A hybrid SOx scrubber system developed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha has been verified and approved by the Republic of Panama following test operations onboard the newbuild K Line car carrier Drive Green Highway.

  • The hybrid scrubber system is the first installation of a system jointly developed by MHI and MKK specifically for marine applications and has been approved by Japanese class society, Class NK.
  • Panamanian approval is for installation on Drive Green Highway after a year of tests.
  • System is deployed on ships inside a container, which the manufacturer hope wil make it appealing for use on existing tonnage.
