Marine fuel cell research gets funding boost

EUROPEAN tech firm consortium MARANDA has won EU funding to field test and further develop fuel cells from Sweden’s PowerCell for marine use.

What you need to know:

  • The MARANDA consortium targets the use of hydrogen power in fuel cells in the marine environment.
  • 48 month project with €3m in funding. Partners are ABB, OMB Saleri, PersEE, Suomen ympäristökeskus, Swiss Hydrogen and VTT.
  • PowerCell scaleable test system to be installed on Arctic research vessel Aranda and tested for 18 months from March 2017.
  • PowerCell already has experience testing fuel cell systems in different industries.
  • Fuel cells seen by many marine environment experts as crucial for reducing shipping’s future footprint.
