Port of Hamburg fee system to incentivise cleaner vessels

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is introducing a new fee rating system that will calculate port users’ fees based on vessels emissions.

Port users will have to present their International Air Pollution Prevention certificate, which will then be used to calculate part of the port fee. Ships that do not present their certificates or who have poor emissions levels will receive a surcharge on the basic price.

If a vessel proves to be very clean according to the IAPP certificate, it will receive discounts on the port fee.

These findings are expected to help develop understanding of the importance of environmental components.

According to the port, every fifth ship visiting the port was considerably cleaner than required by law.
