Flettner rotors to be fitted to Viking Line cruise ferry

Viking Grace, will be fitted with a 24m high Norsepower rotor, making it the first-ever global LNG-wind electric propulsion hybrid ship.

  • Norsepower claims that its technology could help Viking Grace reduce carbon emissions by 900 tonnes annually.
  • The LNG-fuelled ferry runs between Stockholm, Sweden and Turku, Finland. Installation of the rotor will be in 2018.
  • Norsepower has two prototype systems fitted onto another Finnish vessel, Estraden, a ro-ro vessel.
  • Installation is funded by EU cash
  • There is also a Letter of Intent for the installation of another rotor on a Viking newbuilding currently on order with a Chinese shipyard.
