Panel of Top Experts Assemble to Judge Ship Efficiency Awards

The 2016 Ship Efficiency Awards, launched by Fathom Maritime Intelligence in 2014 to give recognition to excellence in technological innovation, progressive initiatives and energy efficiency enablers in the shipping industry, is once again welcoming a line-up of the industry’s top ship efficiency experts to judge nominations for the 2016 awards.

These awards celebrate the companies, initiatives and individuals that continue to make a real difference in advancing energy efficient, sustainable shipping operations.

Shortlisted finalists and the overall winner of each award will be selected by a highly esteemed judging panel of:

Mark Cameron – Chief Operating Officer, Ardmore Shipping: Mark has over 30 years’ experience in the maritime industry focusing on ship management and related corporate activities. Prior to Ardmore he was Vice President, Strategy and Planning for Teekay Marine Services in Vancouver.  Mark also serves as Chairman of the International Parcel Tanker Association and is on the Board of Directors of the West of England and the Advisory Board of Carbon War Room’s Shipping Operation.

Iver Iversen – Director New Technology and Regulatory Affairs, Wilh.Wilhelmsen Holding ASA: For the last 10 years Mr. Iver Iversen been involved in innovation i.e. identifying and implementing new technologies predominately related environmental systems and solutions for ships. Iver has been in involved in evaluating Ballast Water Treatment Systems, Air Emissions Abatement Systems, Fuel Efficiency Improvement Systems and Waste Management Services for the Wilhelmsen Group. For the last 3 years Iver has been a frequent member of the Norwegian delegation to IMO as an advisor.

Arthur Bowring – Managing Director, Hong Kong Shipowners Association: ​Arthur is the Managing Director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and a Maritime Arbitrator and Mediator. He is Chairman of the Labour Affairs Committee of the International Chamber of Shipping, Vice Chairman of the Special Tripartite Committee, Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 and Spokesman of the Maritime Employers’ Group at the International Labour Organisation, and Chairman of the Maritime Services Training Board of the Hong Kong Vocational Training Council. He is Council Member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Convenor of the Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group, and Fellow and Member of several professional associations and organisations.

Craig Eason – Deputy Editor, Lloyd’s List: In 2004 Craig joined Informa, the parent group owning Lloyd’s List and was appointed Marine Technology editor for the newspaper where he covered the developing challenges facing the shipping industry. In recent years Craig has been back on board vessels as a journalist and writer, submitting his experiences in a series of blogs, highlighting life on board from a real seafarer’s point of view and observing the developments of a range of new technologies, regulations and markets the industry has the challenge of adapting to. 

Tristan Smith  – Lecturer, University College London: Dr Tristan Smith, Lecturer in Energy and Transport has, since 2010, grown a substantial shipping focused energy research group. He is the Director of £3.5m Research Councils UK and industry funded project Shipping in Changing Climates. He led the IMO 3rd GHG Study, and is lead author of ISO 19030, which is developing tools for the estimation of trends in hull and propeller performance.

The judging proceedings will be overseen by the awards chairman Katharine Palmer, Environmental Manager at  Lloyd’s Register, who will ensure nominations are fairly scored and deliberations are without biased or pre-assumptions regarding nominees.

Katharine Palmer – Awards Chair  : Environmental Manager at Lloyd’s Register Marine – Katharine moved to Lloyd’s Register Marine to lead the environment and sustainability business, providing consultancy to clients and expert advice to the industry. The awards, which are once again to be hosted by Lloyd’s Register, will be held during a gala dinner at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel & Conference Centre in London on November 2, 2016.

Nominations are officially open – the deadline is September 23, 2016. Shortlisted finalists for each award category will be announced on October 1, 2016. Award winners will be presented during the Ship Efficiency Awards Ceremony on November 2, 2016.
