Peru Steps Closer To Ratifying The Ballast Water Convention

Peru has taken a step closer to ratifying the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ballast Water Convention.

The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has welcomed a statement made by the delegation of Peru, informing the Committee that Peru is expected to deposit its instrument for accession to the BWM Convention with the Secretary-General in the near future.

During the UK Chamber of Shipping’s Ballast Water Forum, held earlier this month, the IMO confirmed that the actual percentage of tonnage that has ratified the Convention now stands at 34.79% rather than the previous figure of 34.82%. The final ratification of world tonnage represented by flag States dropped by 0.03% between March and April 2016 said the IMO representative.

This is because the gross tonnage registered with a flag State changes month-to-month with new vessels, re-flagging of vessels and scrapping of vessels happening continually and in light of this the IMO have decided to conduct monthly calculations of the tonnage that has been ratified, to ensure accurate and up-to-date ratification figures.
