Shipowners urged to take additional equipment verification measures in polar waters

Shipowners and managers must verify that their vessels’ deck machinery and systems can operate safely in the extreme temperatures of the Arctic and Antarctic environments says Thordon Bearings.

  • Temperature below -10°C can cause equipment to fail due to the inability for lubricating greases to function.
  • Arctic and Antarctic conditions also reduce the time crew can spend on deck to carry out maintenance and greasing.
  • Polar Code, which will apply to all ships from January 2018, means ships operating in such environments are not permitted to discharge oily or noxious mixtures into the environment. Shipowners must ensure their equipment is functioning correctly to avoid noncompliance.
