Vancouver rewards quiet ships

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has launched an incentive program for vessels operating in the Port of Vancouver to address concerns about the risk of underwater noise on marine life.

  • EcoAction reduces harbour dues for quieter ships.
  • The program has made Canada the first country in the world to include a marine noise reduction incentive.
  • EcoAction recognises fuel, technology, and environmental management options that make ship operators eligible to receive discounted harbour due rates.
  • Three quiet-vessel ship classifications and three propeller technologies shown to reduce underwater noise are included in the criteria.
  • Only cruise and cargo vessels calling at the Port of Vancouver are applicable for the program.
  • The incentives are part of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s ECHO program, which aims to understand and reduce impacts of commercial vessel activities on at-risk wales throughout the southern coast of British Columbia.
