Remote operation of tug successfully demonstrated

Rolls-Royce and global towage operator Svitzer have demonstrated successful operation of the world’s first remotely operated commercial vessel in Copenhagen harbour, Denmark.  

  • 28m long Svitzer Hermod tug conducted remotely controlled manoeuvres while, including berthing alongside the quay, carrying out a 360° turn, piloting to the Svitzer HQ and docking again.
  • Tug is equipped with Rolls-Royce Dynamic Positioning System and sensors that combine different data inputs. Data is transmitted to the remote operating centre where the captain controls the vessel.
  • Companies have signed an agreement to continue testing remote and autonomous operations for vessels.
