Research expedition vessel given Norwegian funding

The construction of an advanced research expedition vessel has been given the go-ahead with funding from one of Norway’s richest men, Kjell Inge Røkke.

The vessel, which will be managed by the World Wildlife Fund Norway, will be equipped with advanced monitoring and surveying technologies to examine the marine environment.

It will be constructed for operation in challenging Arctic environments as well as tropic areas and will feature slim hull lines and a wave cutting bulb, slender foreship, large propellers and two pairs of stabilisation fins.

The vessel will also have an energy recovery rudder system, medium sped engines, direct drive diesel-electric propulsion system with battery package and an exhaust gas cleaning system.

The ship will be constructed by VARD.  It will feature VARD’s SeaQ Green Pilot, a maritime energy management and operational performance system that collects data and translates it into real-time information on the vessel’s performance in order to reduce its carbon footprint.

Modern laboratories, an auditorium, a hangar for a remote operated vehicle and an autonomous underwater vehicle will be used onboard for research purposes.

The ship will be owned by Rosellinis Four-10, which is owned by Kjell Inge Røkke and his family, will enter service in 2020.

More information on the vessel can be found here.
