Rolls-Royce invests in autonomous shipping R&D

Rolls-Royce is to develop partnerships and opportunities with other organisations in order to enhance remote and autonomous shipping and increase digitalisation in the shipping industry.

  • Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, Tekes, has given Rolls-Royce a grant to assist with the development of a research and development centre in Turku, Finland.
  • Further projects will be developed in Finland around land-based control centres, while artificial intelligence will be used for future remote and autonomous shipping operations.
  • Rolls-Royce is also investing in R&D projects in Norway include a Marine Fleet Management Centre to facilitate remote monitoring, data analysis, optimisation of ships and on board equipment and extend the use of big data for monitoring, planning and performance maintenance.
