Russia’s national resources minister supports Arctic HFO ban

Russia’s National Resources Minister, Sergei Donskoi, has supported the reduction of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic.

  • Donskoi believes that building more LNG-fulled vessels is the first step to reducing the use of HFO.
  • Nuclear-powered icebreakers are being built to reduce the use of HFO and the Arctic Council has launched a green shipping project to build vessels that will use Liquefied natural gas as fuel.
  • Canadian proposal to reduce risks of use and carriage of HFO has been supported by Russia.
