Scrubber Surge Ahead of 2020 Sulphur Cap

Harris Pye Engineering Group has seen a rise in the number of scrubber orders and has been engaged in a number of turnkey scrubber installations for a range of cruise ship companies in order to reduce their emissions and comply with current and future regulations.

The design packages cover a range of open and closed-loop scrubbers, which enable operation in both seawater and freshwater environments. Most recently, Harris Pye completed installation of an Advanced Emission Purification (AEP) System, certified by DNV GL to meet MARPOL Regulation 14 standards.

Along with new exhaust tail pipes, sea chests were installed while the vessel was in service along with the associated overboard discharges. New tanks and on-board conversions to existing tanks were engineered with special coatings in order to accommodate the operating fluid systems.

Harris Pye is currently installing similar systems on other large cruise vessels, with completions expected shortly and throughout the rest of the year.

Harris Pye’s Chief Technical Officer, Chris David, commented: “Not surprisingly, we are seeing a marked increase in interest in complete turnkey installation packages for exhaust gas scrubber systems; from initial site surveys, feasibility studies, 3D laser scanning/modelling ultimately progressing to detailed engineering and design, leading to a cost effective installation programme.”
