Seaspan gets entire fleet MRV verified by DNV GL

BOXSHIP tonnage provider Seaspan is getting its entire fleet MRV certified by the class society DNV GL.

As with all operators of vessels of over 5,000 tonnes and calling at European ports after January next year, the Vancouver -based owner has to have plans in place to monitor the CO2 emissions and work done of its vessels under EU regulations.

The company will have the monitoring plans of 109 vessels verified by the Norwegian/German classification society.

European regulations are in force meaning that after January 1 2018 owners need to monitor and record emission data for voyages to and from European ports, then have the data verified and reported on an annual basis.

Ahead of the new year launch of data collection, owners need to have a verified monitoring pan in place giving details of how the data will be collected. That needs to be in place by the end of August.

In a statement sent to the press,  Seaspan Projects & Technology Director Ian Robinson said: “We have all the data necessary for verification in our Fleet Performance System. The fully digital approach of DNV GL allows for our existing data streams to connect directly into DNV GL’s MRV Engine to be managed automatically. This approach improves efficiency and performance, while technology does the heavy lifting of reporting.”

DNV GL says the digital monitoring system will also be compliant with the pending IMO data collection scheme which will come into force a year after the European scheme starts. The company boasts of having “several thousand” vessels in its EU-MRV verification platform.

In other news relating to Seaspan, the group’s  chief executive, co-chairman and co-founder Gerry Wang announced last week his intention to retire from his position on the board and as chief executive by the end of the year. A search is on to find his replacement.
