Shell to Unveil Upgraded Cylinder Condition Monitoring Service at SMM 2016

Shell Marine has announced that it is set to launch its revamped LubeMonitor service during the SMM 2016 Hamburg trade show this month.

The revitalised model is to include a new software package, Marine Connect, which will make the service simpler, faster and better by enhancing data management and reporting functions.

The LubeMonitor is Shell’s cylinder condition monitoring service that is run in tandem with Shell Rapid Lubricants Analysis (RLA). The enhanced package now allows ship operators to evaluate Shell RLA data and data generated from Shell’s Onboard Alert magnetic iron analyser and Shell’s Onboard Plus BN test kit, in order to strike the best balance between cylinder oil cost and engine reliability by optimising feed rates.

Many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) recommend cylinder drain oil analysis to help ship owners understand the changing demands that are now placed upon marine engines The cylinder drain oil sample analysis therefore, can be used to identify potential oil or equipment issues before they become critical.

According to early adopter of Shell LubeMonitor, Oskar Wehr, they have been reducing oil feed rates by 0.2g/kWh on 25 vessels while remaining in compliance with OEM feed rate recommendations. As a result, they expects to save up to USD 20,000 per vessel, per year.
