Ship Owner Uses Hackers to Test Cyber Security

Author: Catherine Austin, Fathom Maritime Intelligence

Stolt Tankers today revealed that they annually release hackers into their business that attack their IT system, each year resulting in their security being breached in some way.

According to the company, this highlights the cyber security risks that the industry faces but by using hackers gaps can be plugged to ensure cyber safety.

Jose Milhazes treated delegates to great insight this morning at Fathom’s inaugural Smart Operations 2016 conference in Rotterdam.

Milhazes detailed how the company pays 18,000 EUR to a hacking company each January to penetrate their systems.

He also spoke of how in order to protect their networks they have up to four separate networks on board their ships. Networks for engineering and navigation are completely isolated. Business networks are connected only to the office and the crew network sits separate from any other network.

They are also in the process of migrating to cloud computing, a project which should be completed within the next 5 years.
