Nor-Shipping: Marine service providers see spike in operation support as owners seek extra cost savings

Shipowners and operators do not believe that high-tech and innovative equipment alone is enough to maximise the efficiency of their operations.

According to Haraldur Orri Björnsson, Engineer at Marorka, the demand for services and equipment support is just as high as for equipment and technology itself.

While shipowners make use of the latest technologies to enhance their fleet performance, Marorka has identified that more recently the demand for services and support centres to help with understanding equipment operation and feedback has significantly risen.

According to Björnsson, there is more demand today than ever before for fleet performance services.  This trend indicates that shipowners and operators are looking further into how they can get the best out of their equipment and understand how to maximise its potential for efficiency improvements.

Marorka identified this trend, which according to Björnsson led to the development of the company’s fleet performance service centres, two recently established in Hamburg and Singapore.

Björnsson believes that customers are realising that they need to change their performance management methods to reach full savings potential.  This requires greater transparency, particularly from those onshore as Björnsson says he has seen crew on land put greater demand on having access to the same information as those onboard.

Shipowners and operators also have questions about how they are to know when the  data is telling them the right things. Björnsson says this is another driver towards the provision of services.  Shipowners and operators want to be able to identify, or at least be assisted with identifying, whether the data is quick, if it is accurate, and if the equipment is functioning correctly.
