Shore Power For UK Cruise Terminal Promoted

The House of Commons Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Committee has voiced its support for shore power facilities at a new UK cruise terminal in Greenwich, London.

The London City Cruise Port was approved in July last year but faced some criticism in relation to shore power availability. Last week the cross-party Committee backed the call for shore power, stating that the reducing emissions, particularly in places like London, is essential.

There has also been a call to local authorities to ensure that the impact on air quality of any new developments are taken into consideration with mitigation measures implemented from developers.  For instance, and in this case, a requirement to supply electricity to ships at berth to reduce the pollution while in dock and the impacts of emissions to people and the environment.

The shore power facility will be constructed at Enderby Wharf and is expected to be completed by 2017. It aims to handle up to 60 cruise ships per year.
