Simulated oil spill exercise takes place in West Africa

An oil spill training exercise in west Africa has been carried out to test Côte d’Ivoire’s National Oil Spill Contingency Plan.

  • Exercise involved more than 100 participants from public and institutions and the private sector to fight a simulated oil spill at sea and on shore in Abidjan and Assinie.
  • Côte d’Ivoire’s National Oil Spill Contingency Plan has been developed over recent years with support from the Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa (GI WACAF) – a joint IMO-IPIECA project.
  • GI WACAF will draft an evaluation report to help Ivorian authorities to improve the plan by identifying the strengths of the response and areas for improvement.
