IMO’s Marine Safety Committee has adopted amendments to SOLAS2020 to raise the damage stability requirements for passenger vessels in case of flooding caused by a collision.
- Research from academics, shipyards, shipowner and operators, class societies and ship design consultants, funded by the EU and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), have led to these changes.
- Amendments raise the damage stability requirement that represents the ship’s ability to remain stable and afloat during a flooding situation following a collision.
- EMSA III study was carried out, which recommending the stability requirements that became the basis for MSC 98. EU funded research project SAFEDOR indicated damage stability requirements should be raised cost-effectively for RoPax and cruise ships.
