Stena Line Named Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year

Stena Line’s sustainability efforts have been celebrated at the 3rd annual Ship Efficiency Awards, hosted by Lloyd’s Register and organised by Fathom Maritime Intelligence.

The ferry operator was presented with the ‘Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year’ award thanks to the hundreds of energy saving projects undertaken to date. In fact, almost 300 projects have been initiated by the company since 2005, 260 of which have been successfully completed so far.

One of their outstanding initiatives that is well known to the industry is the ongoing retrofit conversion of the Ro-Pax vessel, the Stena Germanica to methanol propulsion. The project is being executed in co-operation with engine manufacturer Wärtsilä, the port of Gothenburg, the port of Kiel and the world’s largest methanol producer and supplier Methanex Corporation.

Funding support has come from EU’s TEN-T, Motorways of the Sea initiative. In addition to retrofitting the ship, the project will also create the appropriate port infrastructure, including the supply chain of methanol. Total expected project cost is around Euro 22 million – of which the EU will support half the investment. Fifty percent of the budget is earmarked for shore side development (bunger barge and methanol tank plus quayside bunkering station).

After the vessel’s fourth engine is converted in Autumn 2016 there will be a 12-month period (approximate) of running the ship on and off methanol during various phases of operation and ensuring switching between fuels as well as operating on a single fuel runs seamlessly.

In addition to methanol, Stena Line is planning to launch another pilot project for partial electrical ship propulsion in 2017 on the Stena Jutlandica.

The company is also working towards a target of a 35% reduction of CO2 emissions per nautical mile between 2010-2030, with less use of plastics and chemicals, increased recycling and the adoption of clean energy.
