Swedish Maritime Administration To Adopt Clean Shipping Index

The Swedish Maritime Administration has announced its intentions to differentiate its fair dues system using the Clean Shipping Index’s environmental scores.

The Clean Shipping Index allows cargo owners to select clean ships and quality ship operators while transport buyers use it to calculate and minimise their environmental footprint. Ship owners present the environmental profile of their fleet to customers who can use this for procurement situations as well as for bench-marking so ship owners can keep track and identify areas for environmental improvement.

The Administration’s fairway dues incentive system is currently based upon the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) a ship emits. However the Administration say that this is not enough to meet ambitious Swedish targets and given the tough environmental impact reduction challenges that the industry faces.

Therefore, under the proposal a new incentive system will take effect.  Ships that have a verified green score on the Clean Shipping Index will be able to take advantage of lowered fairway dues.

The exact scoring levels and associated fee system will be announced later this year.
