Taiwan retrofits hybrid passenger ferry

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, converts diesel-powered ferry passenger ferry to hybrid electric.

  • Passenger ferry has been retrofitted with a Finnish Visedo electric propulsion system, replacing original diesel engines.
  • Ferry operates from Kaohsiung harbour to Cijian Island, a 10 minute journey, and if successful, city government set to retrofit rest of fleet.
  • Ferry Happiness is expected to halve daily fuel consumption, and save more than 25,000 litres of fuel per year, says Visedo.
