Tallink Welcomes 3% Engine Energy Efficiency Improvements From Low Sulphur Fuel Use

Tallink Grupp has cited Neste’s low-sulphur marine fuel as the catalyst to helping the company improve the energy efficiency of its engines by approximately 3% when compared with using heavy fuel oil (HFO).

Neste offers two low-sulphur marine fuels (Neste MDO DMB and Neste RMB), which have a sulphur content of 0.1% and therefore ensure compliance with the European Union (EU) Sulphur Directive for ships operating in the Baltic, North Sea and English Channel.

The advantage of Neste’s low-sulphur fuels is that they burn more cleanly than regular HFO.  They have good flammability, a lower need for heating and cleaner burning, meaning that the service life of engines increases while operating costs are lower and maintenance intervals are extended.

The fuels are distributed from Neste’s terminals in Naantali and Kokkola, Finland, from where products are trucked to all Finnish ports.

Neste estimates that by the end of 2017 a new product will be launched which has a significantly higher viscosity than the currently available products. The RMG-type product will be compatible with all marine fuels previously developed by Neste.
