US and Canada commit to HFO phase-out in arctic waters

The United States and Canada have issued a joint statement that includes the development of a strategy to phase down the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) within the Arctic.

  • A proposal will be made to the MEPC in July 2017 indicating how to begin implementing the phase-out of HFO.
  • The US and Canada’s statement also includes the ban of oil and natural gas drilling in the majority of the Arctic’s Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.
  • Canada has committed to banning all oil and natural gas licensing in the Canadian Arctic.
  • HFO is currently banned in Antarctica and in the national park waters around the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, but has yet to be banned in Arctic waters.
