WWL Commit to Using Low-Sulphur Fuel at All Ports

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) has decided to use low-sulphur fuel for all of its ships at all ports.

Following the company’s review of its sulphur policy, there has been in a shift in emphasis to include not just the environmental considerations of shipping operations, but also the social and health ones too.

Previously, there was more focus on acidification from sulphur but using the latest research WWL has realised it can make a difference socially and on people’s health by using lower sulphur fuels. In order to reduce the sulphur content of emissions from a ship’s exhaust engine, either low-sulphur fuel or marine scrubbers can be used.

Currently  the use of low-sulphur fuel below 0.1% is only compulsory in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) but out of the ports the company visits on a regular basis, more than half are outside these ECAs.
