2020 sulphur cap could cost ship owners $60bn a year

A Wood Makenzie study has stated that global bunker fuel costs could rise by up to US $60bn from 2020 when the IMO’s global sulphur cap of 0.5% enters into force.

  •  Study suggests that with a global sulphur cap alternative fuels will need to be looked into more closely or systems such as scrubbers to reduce emissions will have to be installed.
  • Wood Mackenzie says that higher crude prices and limited availability of marine gas oil could increase its price almost four times that of fuel in 2016, resulting in additional cost of US $60 billion annually.
  • Sushant Gupta, research director for Asia refining at Wood Mackenzie says that scrubbers may provide return of 20-50%, but penetration rate could be limited by access to finance, capacity of scrubbers, dry-dock availability and technology uncertainties.
