The Swedish P&I Club has released a new guide on the causes and prevention of fires onboard ships.
Fires generally occur quite infrequently, and often go under the radar. But according to the P&I Club, their impacts can be disastrous, reaching an average of several million USD each time.
Here is an overview of the main causes of onboard fires according to the Swedish P&I Club:
Some statistics
- Fire accounted for 0.76% of claims made between 2006-2016.
- In the same period, fire was the largest claim made in terms of cost. It accounted for 28.04% of all cargo claims.
- The majority of fires, 39%, occur on dry bulk cargo ships. 29% on RoRos, 19% on containers, 9% on bulkers, and 4% on tankers.
