In the latest draft of the new global climate agreement currently being hammered out at the COP21 climate talks in Paris, both shipping and aviation industries are notably absent.
Although an earlier draft of the agreement that was released on December 5 hosted a small ‘optional’ reference, this reference has now been dropped in a version published on December 9.
The draft in question will be chiselled into a legally binding and universal deal to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in hopes of keeping global warming below 2°C.
However, although there is much hot air being exhaled through grievance to this omission, the reappearance of these industries in the final climate deal scripture may not be wholly surprising.
The negotiations are scheduled to last through December 11, 2015.
