e-Training Prospers As Industry Sails Into Smart Era

e-Learning maritime training provider, Videotel has reported that owners and operators are increasingly investing in e-learning services for crew training.

Videotel’s e-training software provides ship owners and operators with the option for training their crew onboard.

In an age of smart shipping, the development and uptake of e-training  services powered by onboard connectivity has risen.

Videotel’s maritime solutions incorporate videos and interactive computer-based training, allowing for study onboard, onshore or online.  The software uses high drama, animation, tests and much more and are available in a range of formats.  The ship’s crew can be trained in a vast array of disciplines, according to the latest edition of its training catalogue, STCW Maritime Training Catalogue 2015-2017, there is 950 new and updated titles available in a range of formats.  The company’s CBT programmes are also included, where more than 500 e-learning courses are available.  Training topics include span those for lessening environmental impact such as ballast water management to optimising performance for fuel efficiency gains. Taking operations within Emission Control Areas (ECAs) as an example, Videotel’’s services facilitates full training regarding operation in ECAs.

Videotel’s e-training is partially powered through collaboration with Inmarsat and KVH Industries, the latter of which acquired Videotel in 2014 to enhance Broadband networking, computer-based training (CBT) and interactive distance learning courses. Through an agreement with Inmarsat, Videotel’s Basic Training Package of 20 essential maritime training programs is now available with IP-MobileCast content delivery service.  According to Videotel, its training solutions are now in use on more than 12,000 ships worldwide.  Their training programmes and software have also received almost 100 awards in recent years, providing evidence of the programmes’ market infiltration success.
