DNV GL and 25 partners from the Norwegian maritime industry and the Norwegian authorities have presented the five pilot projects that will be pursued as part of Norway’s Green Coastal Shipping Programme.
The programme aims to promote the research and implementation of green technology concepts in Norway’s shipping sector. The five pilot projects include different ship types, and infrastructure with an emphasis on alternative fuel concepts and are briefly summarised below.
CargoFerry Plug-In Hybrid
This project aims to develop a cost-effective and profitable zero-emissions short-sea container ship that is powered by a plug-in hybrid liquefied natural gas (LNG)/battery propulsion system. After developing the technical concept, the project partners will calculate the ship’s environmental footprint and carry out a cost/benefit analysis.
Next-Generation Green Shuttle Tanker
This project will investigate technical solutions for battery power in a shuttle tanker, as well as the economic and regulatory feasibility thereof.
In addition, it will review new technological solutions for utilising volatile organic compounds (VOC) which are generated during offshore loading and represent an energy source that could potentially be used for onboard power generation and reduce total fuel consumption.
Hybrid Ocean Farming Vessel
The objective of the third pilot project is to define an optimised hybrid propulsion system for more energy efficient operations with greater redundancy.
Conversion Of Cargo Carrier Into Battery-Hybrid LNG Carrier
The project’s aims is to develop a cost-efficient LNG distribution concept with a hybrid LNG/battery propulsion solution and zero-emission port operations. Converting an existing ship may provide a cost-effective option for small LNG carriers.
Pioneering Green Port Project
The fifth pilot project has the objective of developing a low-energy-consumption port with a minimal carbon footprint by, for example, using electric heavy-duty vehicles, cranes, and smart gates, and offering cold ironing services and charging stations for plug-in hybrid ships.
