It was at the UK Chamber of Shipping and Fathom Maritime Intelligence’s joint Ballast Water Forum held in London yesterday that Meridena Kauffman, United States Coast Guard (USCG) addressed the question of if there is potential for ports to offer incentives to ships that have already been equipped with ballast water treatment systems (BWTS), ahead of entry into force and implementation of requirements of the Ballast Water Convention.
Although Kauffman deemed this to be a good idea and a good question during the live Q&A, she stated that this would be up to individual ports to do this and whether they choose to implement such incentives, rather than being USCG-led.
