In a statement issued earlier this week, the Panama Canal Authority said the first reservation through the new canal has been granted to a 120-foot wide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker owned by Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), represented by Panama-based shipping agent Norton Lilly International.
The Panama Canal Authority announced this reservation after starting to take transit reservations for Neopanamax vessels through the canal’s new wider, deeper locks.
“We are pleased with the results of this initial phase of transit reservations and we hope that each day more vessels transit through the expanded canal,” said Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano.
“Today marks an important day in Canal history,” Quijano added.
The latest update from the canal authority stated that the canal expansion project is 97% complete. The new canal is scheduled to open on June 27 this year.
