First LNG Car Carrier Type to Grace the Seas

United European Car Carriers (UECC) has launched its new dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).

The European short sea RoRo operator’s vessel, the TBN AUTO ECO, is the first of its kind with an LNG fuel propulsion system that has been built to Lloyd’s Register class.

Following the installation the ship will undergo sea and gas trials to test the capabilities of the dual-fuel and to establish its operational efficiency running purely on LNG.

The ship has also been built to A1 Finnish/Swedish ice class for operation in the Baltic and ice prone areas.  The ship has a capacity for 3,800 cars and will be the largest PCTC type vessel designed to date for this purpose.

The ship was constructed at NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China, and is the first of two Lloyd’s Register classified dual-fuel LNG PCTCs to set sail following the order that was carried out in March 2014.

The ship is due for delivery to UECC on September 28, 2016 in Nantong, while the second carrier is expected to join in the second half of the year.
