BC Ferries chooses PANOLIN Environmentally Considerate Lubricants

BC Ferries’ newest, 150-passenger, 50-vehicle Baynes Sound Connector, has been built by Seaspan Ship yard in North Vancouver to be the ‘Greenest’ vessel in the fleet.

In supplying (1900 metre crossing) Buckley Bay – Denman Island cable ferry, with PANOLIN HLP SYNTH Environmentally Considerate hydraulic fluid, everything relating to the environment was taken into consideration.

This ferry will be operating in BC’s Aquaculture heartland. The Timberland Cable Tensioning Winch system operates with PANOLIN HLP SYNTH Hydraulic fluid, as does the Bosch Rexroth Hydraulic Power Units.

The ferry will maintain the same level of service standards as the current self-propelled vessels in BC’s fleet; however, with no propellers and twice the fuel efficiency as conventional ferries, a cable ferry is a much more sustainable and ‘greener’ alternative to the current marine transportation. The ferry also provides significant benefits such as: CO₂ reduction (reduced environmental footprint), lower maintenance cost and less down time. The ‘Fill for Life’ characteristics of the Panolin HLP SYNTH biodegradable hydraulic fluid minimizes used oil disposal and finally, because of the biodegradability, non-toxicity and no bioaccumulation, Panolin HLP SYNTH hydraulic oil mitigates risk of impact on the environment and particularly with respect to nearby aquaculture sites.

Following successful operational trials, the Baynes Sound Connector entered into full operational service in February.

BC Ferries is part of the Green Marine program that encourages its participants (Shipowners, Shipyards, Ports and Terminals) to reduce their environmental footprint by taking positive actions. Envirolin Canada has been a registered member for over 2 years. As Chris Richardson, of BNAC Environmental Solution Inc says: “We are pleased to be a part of their Green Marine Team”.
