Stena Line has signed a contract with DNV GL to provide classification services for Stena’s new RoPax ferries that have been hailed the most fuel efficient ferries in the world.
The ferries, which have been designed by Stena’s engineering staff, are 50% larger than today’s standard RoPax vessels and incorporate emissions reducing technologies and efficiency initiatives that have been developed throughout the Stena Group.
The ferries and their main engines will be gas ready to facilitate fuelling by either methanol or liquefied natural gas (LNG). DNV GL’s Gas Ready notation will enable Stena to ensure the LNG vessels comply with the relevant safety and operational requirements, providing a clear picture of the level of gas fuelled preparedness. During the classification process DNV GL will carry out statutory work on behalf of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
The ferries are intended to be used for short international routes, with the first four delivered to be used within Stena Lines’ route network in Northern Europe.
The ferries will be constructed at AVIC Weihai Shipyard, China.
